Civil Engineering Salary Guide

CIVIL ENGINEERING SALARY

Typical civil engineering salary

A decent civil engineering salary awaits experienced and highly skilled engineers. Factors that typically dictate their compensation include degree of expertise, the business they work for, the state they are in, and the work they specialize in.The occupation in recent times has been divided into several different fields. Civil engineers’ average annual income is estimated at $75,000. As with all fields the more experience you have, the higher your salary will be. In fact, engineers with vast experience and excellent qualifications can achieve an annual income of as high as $120,000.

The civil engineering salary rates for the middle 50 percent range from $57,330 to $90,160.  Salaries for the lowest 10 percent are less than $45,780 while those for the highest 10 percent are more than $110,890.

The private sector pays a civil engineering salary that is on average 8 percent higher that that offered by government offices and public agencies. Civil engineers working for state governments average $75,870, while federal positions average $88,040. The mean wage changes from one region to another, but the states where mean income is known to be highest are District of Columbia, California, Texas, New Jersey, and Louisiana.

Civil engineers with a BS diploma are usually given a starting rate of $49,540. A master’s degree will jack up that starting salary to $59,880 while a doctorate degree will bring it even higher to $65,470. It has been noted in the past several years that more and more employers are favoring post-graduate degree holders, and it is predicted that their number will increase by over 50 percent through 2015.

Civil engineering job opportunities to expand

Civil engineer employment is projected to grow by nearly 20 percent through 2016— faster than average for all occupations. Population growth will no doubt increase the need for civil engineers who will manage public and private construction projects, and lead revitalization efforts. Their services will be needed most in the construction of roads, bridges and related transit facilities as well as public utility and energy delivery complexes.

Civil engineers hold about 292,000 jobs, making this one of the largest segments of the engineering community. The civil engineering salary could improve as a result of such surging demand. There is reason to believe that greater need for civil engineers could lead to higher a civil engineering salary. New infrastructure as required by the current population shift will be the biggest mandate for the western and southern regions, while revitalization of aging structures will be the top priority of the northeastern and Midwest regions. Environmental management will lift demand for civil engineers, particularly in more densely populated regions. Similarly new public and private projects focusing on renewable and sustainable energy projects will require the services of more civil engineers in all regions.

The civil engineering space is assured of greater job security and appropriate civil engineering salary levels in the long term, due mainly to the fact that most of the civil engineer’s duties cannot be outsourced.

Civil Engineering Degree & Training required

Civil engineers will be required to have graduated from a post-secondary school with a four-year degree in civil engineering, which requires a strong background in mathematics and the physical sciences. Certain areas require civil engineers to obtain a license. One with no license may not lay claim to the “civil engineer” title.

Make sure to take full advantage of government grants and assistance. You can also complete some of your basic courses online, which helps if you are strapped for time.

On-the-job requirements

So are quality assurance and safety, thus it is imperative that you check the site and eliminate all potential hazards. Usually the civil engineer would discuss in detail the requirements and if necessary will consult with his other counterparts and superiors on the project like the architects and contractors. People skills also come in handy, especially where good communication among parties involved is much needed to ensure the project’s success. How well one prepares designs and blueprints for various projects could also serve as a basis for one’s civil engineering salary.

A stable work environment where jobs are enough awaits those eyeing a civil engineering career. A fair amount of research and preparation should help you kick-start a career that guarantees a good civil engineering salary on top of growth opportunities and job satisfaction.

I will be adding more articles shortly including what a civil engineer job description is, how to get a civil  civil engineering degree, what a chemical engineer salary is, electrical engineer salary, structural engineer salary, aerospace engineer salary and and intro to structural engineering as these are related topics to a civil engineering salary.

Civil Engineering Books: A Review of the Best Ones Available

Civil Engineering Books

Due to the dynamic nature of civil engineering, it is important to have good and up to date civil engineering books. Besides acquiring relevant degrees, anyone who wishes to practice as a civil engineer is also required to pass the Principles and Practice in Engineering (PE) Examination. In this article, we inform you of the best civil engineering books that can help you better understand this field, enable you to adequately prepare for the PE examination and get an attractive civil engineering salary package.

Brief review of the best civil engineering books

Here are  some civil engineering books that you will find helpful in building your engineering  career:

The Civil Engineering Handbook:

Authored by Dr. Wai-Fah Chen, this handbook is ideal for practicing engineers and can also be a rich resource for any engineering faculty and students. The handbook for civil engineering book provides a broad coverage of key engineering areas organized into 8 sections  namely  surveying, construction, hydraulics, environmental, geotechnical, materials, transportation and structural engineering.

Civil Engineering All-In-One PE Exam Guide: Breadth And Depth:

Authored by Indranil Goswami, this PE exam reference book is probably one of the best for any person who aspires to practice as a civil engineer. The book covers crucial civil engineering topics including geotechnics, construction and structures.
